The crystallographic community mourns the loss of Dr. Benno P. Schoenborn, who passed away on September 23, 2025, in Phoenix, Arizona.
A pioneering biophysicist, Benno transformed structural biology through his groundbreaking work in neutron protein crystallography, making it possible to directly visualize hydrogen atoms in macromolecules. During his career at Brookhaven National Laboratory and and Los Alamos National Labs, he developed innovative instrumentation and experimental methods that remain cornerstones of the field today.
In recognition of his exceptional contributions, Benno received the Ernest Orlando Lawrence Award and, in 2016, was honored with the ACA Bau Neutron Diffraction Award for his pioneering advances in neutron diffraction and his lifelong commitment to crystallographic science.
A longtime ACA member and mentor, Benno was admired not only for his scientific insight but also for his warmth, curiosity, and collaborative spirit. His legacy continues to inspire generations of researchers who follow in his path.
We invite colleagues and friends to share memories, stories, and reflections about Benno in the comments below. His biography and career highlights can also be found on the ACA History site.
